Unique antique desk box made from an original Neptune Meter Co. “Trident” water meter housing and hinged cover from New York. The brass or bronze meter component bears serial number 1197480, with early patent information cast inside the lid, including an 1898 date. It was later mounted to a finished round wooden base, fitted with a wooden interior and completed with felt on the bottom. The hinged lid opens to create a small storage compartment ideal for paper clips, coins, jewelry or other small items. Measures approximately 4 inches tall. The metal has an attractive aged patina, with surface wear throughout consistent with age and its original industrial use. The age and maker of the later wooden conversion are unknown.
