Octagonal yellow brass, mid-18th-century shape. The lid is a naïve Holland: mill, water, boats, cut by hand and softened by two centuries of thumbs. Underneath, four lion-paw feet — table model, not a flat pocket tin.
Open it. Five coarse hinge teeth, filed before factories made tidy piano hinges. Inside, the dull grey tin lining that kept tobacco off raw brass. That pairing is what collectors look for.
Use it as it was meant — tobacciana — or as a keep-sake / jewel box on a desk. Hollywood Regency likes the paws and the gold; wabi-sabi and Japandi like the worn cut; industrial and modern classic like the weight of an old object on a clean table.
No maker’s stamp. Dutch brass almost never had one.
