D. Watson was a real and highly prominent officer in the United States Coast Artillery Corps (C.A.C.). Formal U.S. Congressional Senate records date his promotion to 1st Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps to September 1908. By 1917, he reached the rank of Captain, placing the date of this inscription perfectly within the pre-WWI era (circa 1912-1917). Following his service as Captain, Watson rose rapidly through the ranks, deploying to France during World War I and eventually returning to command the 42nd Artillery Regiment, CAC, as a full Colonel in 1919.
