This is a particularly interesting passenger manifest because it records named travelers from the diplomatic, military, naval, religious and international communities then traveling between Japan and North America.
Among the passengers is the de Lucy de Fossarieu family. Pierre de Lucy de Fossarieu was a prominent French diplomat in Japan, arriving in 1883 and later serving as French Vice-Consul and Consul at Kobe for nearly two decades. He also represented Spanish and Portuguese consular interests. The passenger list records Mrs. P. de Lucy de Fossarieu and three children, along with additional members of the de Lucy family.
Other passengers printed on the manifest include numerous individuals identified with military, naval and clerical titles, including Lieut. G. G. Codrington, R.N.; Eng. Lieut. G. S. Holgate, R.N.; Lieut. Com. J. W. Kincaide, U.S.A.; W. A. Merritt, Paymaster, U.S.A.; Commander P. Nelson Ward, R.N.; Right Rev. F. R. Graves; Rev. G. G. Bruce; Rev. H. Keall; Rev. C. F. McRae; Capt. H. N. B. Hollinshead; Capt. F. W. Stoddart; and Capt. J. Willbrandt.
The document also provides the ship\'s officers, headed by Commander H. Pybus, R.N.R., followed by Chief Officer W. Dixon Hopcraft, R.N.R., A. H. Reed, R.N.R., J. Stewart, A. J. Hosken, R.N.R., G. Cross, Chief Engineer W. Auld, Purser Donald Lamont, Surgeon G. W. Boggs, M.D., Chief Steward L. R. Warn and Stewardess Mrs. M. E. Murcheson.
The illustrated cover bears the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. / Royal Mail Steamship Line / Japan & China title with crossed flags. The reverse contains a wonderful period Pacific route map showing Japan, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Honolulu, Vancouver, Victoria and San Francisco, together with an unused Steamship Log.
The Empress of Japan was part of Canadian Pacific\'s famous trans-Pacific Empress service. Contemporary 1904 advertising described these Empress liners as 6,000-ton, 10,000-horsepower vessels and advertised the Yokohama-to-Vancouver crossing at approximately 12 days.
Condition: Genuine 1904 example in well-used condition. Overall toning, staining and handling wear; creases and edge wear; paper loss along the lower edge; and a few old marks beside passenger names. Despite the condition issues, the passenger manifest, voyage information, officers list and map remain very legible. Please review all photographs carefully.
