ITEM DESCRIPTION

Scarce early advertising recipe booklet titled “Frozen Dainties as made with The White Mountain Freezer from Recipes by Mrs. Lincoln, Author of The Boston Cook Book,” issued by the White Mountain Freezer Co. of Nashua, New Hampshire, for owners of their famous triple-motion hand ice-cream freezer. Slim oblong booklet printed in blue on pale green paper, filled with detailed instructions, mechanical illustrations, and a full sequence of ice-cream, sherbet, water-ice, and frozen-fruit recipes tailored specifically to the White Mountain Freezer.

Mary J. (“Mrs. D. A.”) Lincoln was one of the pioneering American cooking teachers and the first principal of the Boston Cooking School, where she helped formalize scientific home cookery and later influenced Fannie Farmer and others. This promotional booklet was one of the ways her name reached middle-class home cooks across the country, pairing the authority of “Mrs. Lincoln’s Boston Cook Book” with White Mountain’s patented freezer. Inside are sections on “Directions for Freezing,” practical advice about finely crushing ice and using rock salt, and repeated plugs for the convenience of a hand-cranked freezer in an era before electric refrigeration, making this a vivid primary source for early twentieth-century American culinary and advertising history.

Contents include cutaway views of the White Mountain Freezer showing the triple-motion dasher, a complete parts diagram and “Net Prices of Parts for the White Mountain Freezer” by size, and a catalogue-style spread on the White Mountain Ice Chipper and tight packing covers. Recipe sections move through Neapolitan and Philadelphia ice-cream bases, plain ice-cream and ice-cream made with gelatine, then flavored variations such as vanilla, lemon, coffee, chocolate, caramel, Hollipin, strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, apricot, and peach. Further chapters cover sherbets and water ices, orange, lemon, strawberry or blackberry, and grape sherbets, along with “Frozen Fruits” that treat berries, bananas, pineapples, pears, melons, and even tomatoes as frozen desserts. Together the text, typography, and illustrations nicely capture period tastes in ice-cream and frozen sweets while doubling as a miniature trade catalogue for one of the best-known American freezer manufacturers.

Physical condition is good overall for a fragile, roughly 120-year-old ice-cream freezer advertising recipe booklet, but it does show the expected age and handling wear. The original printed green front wrap is present but completely detached from the stapled text block, while the rear wrap is lacking; the exposed spine fold shows small chips and edge wear around the two original wire staples, which exhibit mild oxidation but still hold the inner pages securely. The surviving front cover shows scattered surface rubbing, a light circular damp mark near the upper left, small edge nicks and short tears, and softening at the corners. Internally, the first and last pages have a bit more toning and handling soil at the edges, with visible tide lines and light staining along the upper inner margin on several leaves, a touch of waviness from old moisture, and a few small corner creases or tiny edge tears from turning the pages. Text pages are evenly tanned but remain reasonably supple for their age, with type still dark and legible and the mechanical illustrations and parts tables sharp and complete; no writing, underlining, or ex-library markings are apparent on the pages shown.
