**Henry Clark Corbin** was born on September 15, 1842, in Monroe Township, Clermont County, Ohio. He grew up on a farm and attended local schools before going to Clermont Academy. When the American Civil War began, Corbin volunteered as a second lieutenant in the 83rd Ohio Infantry in July 1862. He soon transferred to the 79th Ohio Infantry and was commissioned a major in the 14th United States Colored Infantry in November 1863.
Corbin\'s military career was marked by numerous promotions and significant contributions. He participated in the Battle of Decatur and the Battle of Nashville, earning brevet promotions for his gallantry and meritorious service. After the Civil War, he continued his service in the Regular Army, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and colonel.
In 1898, Corbin was appointed Adjutant General of the U.S. Army with the rank of brigadier general. He was promoted to major general in 1900 and later commanded the Division of the Atlantic and the Division of the Philippines. In April 1906, he was promoted to lieutenant general, becoming the senior ranking officer on active duty in the U.S. Army.
Corbin retired from active service in September 1906 and lived in Washington, D.C. He passed away on September 8, 1909, at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, New York City, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Throughout his career, Corbin was known for his dedication to duty and his significant contributions to the U.S. Army. His legacy continues to be remembered and honored by military historians and enthusiasts alike.
