Wallabout Market grew up alongside the Brooklyn Navy Yard starting in 1884, becoming one of the largest wholesale food markets in the world at its early-twentieth-century peak. William Tubby designed its permanent Dutch Colonial Revival market buildings in 1894-96, giving the market a reputation as one of the more handsome of New York\'s wholesale markets.
This card belonged to the Wallabout Market Protective Association, the vendors\' own membership organization, and was a preprinted template for notifying a merchant that a resignation had been accepted at a recent meeting. This particular copy was never filled in with a name or a meeting date; president M. Cohn and secretary J. E. Keveny\'s names appear only in print.
The market itself didn\'t survive much past this card\'s era. It was torn down during World War II so the Navy Yard could expand to seven times its former size, and the site is now home to Steiner Studios. Little of the Protective Association\'s own records appears to have survived beyond scattered items like this one.
