CONDITION:
Photos are the majority of the listing. Fast shipping.
Good vintage condition. The binding remains intact, with expected rubbing, discoloration, and wear from age and institutional use. There is wear to the gilt spine lettering, age toning to the pages, a penciled price on the half-title page, and a historic military ownership stamp. No dust jacket. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
DESCRIPTION:
A fascinating early A. L. Burt hardcover edition of The Tennessee Shad by Owen Johnson, bearing an uncommon World War I military ownership stamp:
“3D CO. U.S. WAR PRISON BK. GD.”
This abbreviation identifies the 3rd Company, United States War Prison Barracks Guard. The unit was associated with War Prison Barracks No. 3 at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah, where German naval personnel and civilian internees were held during World War I.
The stamp likely dates the book’s military use to approximately 1917–1919. It was probably maintained as part of the guard company’s barracks or circulating library. The stamp does not prove that the book was personally owned by a German prisoner, but it provides an unusual and historically significant connection to the Fort Douglas internment camp.
The book carries a 1911 copyright by Doubleday, Page & Company and an A. L. Burt Company title page. This is an early period reprint rather than the first edition. It features a sturdy reinforced hardcover binding with a textured brown spine, gilt lettering, blue cloth-covered boards, and decorative endpapers. The reinforced binding may have been applied for institutional use.
An appealing association copy for collectors of:
• World War I history
• German POW and internment material
• Fort Douglas and Utah history
• U.S. Army memorabilia
• Antique institutional-library books
• Owen Johnson and Lawrenceville School fiction
