Miners discovered Altensteiner Höhle in 1799 while blasting a road to nearby Altenstein Castle, and Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen had it developed by 1802 into Thuringia\'s first show cave, an underground counterpart to his romantic landscape park above. Lit walkways, a music gallery, and a cave dome turned the passage into what visitors of the era called a landscape garden beneath the earth.
At its center lies a navigable underground lake where the duke himself reportedly rowed. Later surveys have traced the cave to nearly three kilometers, making it the longest known cave in Thuringia, and its Zechstein-era limestone still yields fossil reef species first studied here in the early nineteenth century.
