1924 Boston Harbor T-Wharf Italian Fishermen Custom House Glass Negative OOAK

Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique gelatin silver 4x5 glass plate negative captured in 1924, presenting an extraordinary documentary view of Boston’s historic waterfront: Italian fishing fleet boats tied up at T-Wharf with the iconic Custom House Tower soaring above the skyline.

The period kraft filing sleeve is inscribed in vintage pencil:

"Italian Fishermen / & Custom House / from T- Wharf / 1924"

Historical Context:

During the 1920s, T-Wharf and the surrounding Atlantic Avenue wharves formed the cultural and commercial heart of Boston's Italian-American fishing community, primarily composed of Sicilian immigrants who dominated the local inshore and ground-fishing trades. At the same time, the Boston Custom House Tower (completed in 1915 as the city's first true skyscraper) served as the navigational and architectural anchor of Boston Harbor.

This richly detailed press negative provides a layered, high-resolution cross-section of early 20th-century urban maritime life:

  • Foreground Harbor Fleet: Multiple wooden fishing boats clustered at the dock with intricate rigging, furled lines, and distinctive gill nets draped like delicate cobwebs across the spars and masts to dry.

  • Wharf Architecture & Commercial Signs: The weathered wooden fish houses and packing shacks along the pier, with visible vintage commercial wall and rooftop signage including the prominent billboard for "ALPINE CHOCOLATES COMPANY" and packing house notices.

  • The Skyline & Landmark: The massive neoclassical granite clock tower of the Custom House rising high over the rooftops, church spires, and industrial brick tenements of downtown Boston and the North End.

Specifications:
  • Format: Heavy antique silver gelatin glass plate negative, exposed directly in a press camera in 1924.

  • Archive Sleeve Included: Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft darkroom filing sleeve, bearing authentic period pencil notations: "Italian Fishermen / & Custom House / from T- Wharf / 1924".

Please Note: This listing is for the original antique glass plate negative and its period paper archive sleeve only. Any positive photographic images shown in this listing are modern inverted digital scans provided solely as a visual representation to show what a finished photograph prints like. No physical paper photograph, modern print, or paper product of any kind is included with this purchase.

Condition:

Good to Very Good antique condition. Heavy glass plate is structurally sound with no cracks, fractures, or structural chips. The emulsion across the central architectural and maritime composition is crisp with sharp resolution and strong tonal range. Emulsion exhibits authentic age-appropriate perimeter silvering/mirroring along the top edge and authentic emulsion flaking/loss along the extreme lower left and bottom borders, as clearly pictured, entirely outside the primary Custom House and fleet subject area. Accompanied by the original period kraft studio filing sleeve with vintage pencil notations.

The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
