1924 Constantinople Ottoman French Declaration Steamship SOFIA Bosphorus Sale Wreck
A bilingual document (Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script, upper portion; French typewritten text, lower portion) dated Constantinople, 27 September 1924. The French section is titled \"DECLARATION\" and states that the signatory acknowledges receipt from Mr. Nimet Tevfik of the sum of Ltqs. 150 [Turkish pounds] for the sale of the hull/carcass of the steamship \"SOFIA\", described as having been burned and sunk at the mouth of the Bosphorus on the European side at a place called Baghlar Alti (Caripsa), near the lighthouse. Mr. Nimet Tevfik purchases the carcass in whatever unknown state it lies at the bottom of the sea at that location. From this date forward, the seller declares he will bear no responsibility if the buyer encounters difficulties with the Port Authorities or any other party, and will pay nothing in the way of fees or expenses — all formalities being the buyer\'s sole responsibility. Signed by Ivan Tantche Djambazoff (Bulgarian subject), with witnesses Mintche Kouzmanoff and Kountche Theodoroff (also Bulgarian subjects).
The upper Ottoman-script portion appears to be a Turkish version of the same or related document. An exceptional primary source for the history of maritime commerce, shipwrecks, and Bulgarian-Ottoman commercial relationships in early Republican Istanbul, with direct reference to the wreck of a named vessel on the Bosphorus.
