1928 Last Outdoor Circus South Boston Big Top Midway Glass Negative Trio OOAK

Monumental historic set of three (3) original antique gelatin silver glass plate camera negatives captured in 1928, documenting the definitive end of an era: the FINAL outdoor railroad tent circus ever pitched in Boston on the Southampton Street grounds before Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey moved indoors permanently into the newly opened Boston Garden.

Preserved directly within the historic press morgue of the Boston Herald-Traveler, this cohesive three-plate panorama captures the breathtaking scale, bustling carnival midway, and working menagerie of \"Circus Day\" in South Boston.

The Historic Morgue Sleeve Inscription:

Accompanied by the original vintage red-edge newspaper darkroom filing sleeve bearing the photographer\'s direct historical notation:

  • Filing Header: \"Circus Days in South Boston — last outdoor circus here before it moved into the Garden\"

  • Earlier Crossed-Out Inscription: \"Kiddies Cooling off / South End 1928\"

Historical & Geographical Context:

In November 1928, the Boston Garden opened over North Station, completely transforming large-scale touring entertainment and ending the decades-long tradition of pitching massive canvas big tops on the city\'s open fringe lots. These three exposures stand as the last comprehensive visual record of the railroad circus operating outdoors under canvas in Boston:

  • Location: The Southampton Street Circus Grounds along the South Boston / Roxbury border, positioned immediately alongside the multi-track freight sidings of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.

  • Plate 1 — The Bustling Midway & Cracker Jack Stand: An elevated high-angle perspective looking down the main thoroughfare. Crowds of men in fedoras, women in cloche hats, and children line up outside striped concession stands featuring painted signage for \"CRACKER JACK\", ornate carved wooden ticket and tableau wagons, and towering side-show illustrated canvas banners.

  • Plate 2 — \"Big Show Main Entrance\" Canvas Arch: A second angle focusing directly on the massive valanced portal marked \"BIG SHOW MAIN ENTRANCE\", showing turnstiles, crowd control ropes, and hundreds of ticket-holders flowing inside beneath the billowing main canvas roof.

  • Plate 3 — The Open Working Menagerie & South Boston Skyline: A sweeping field view showing four tethered Asian elephants standing head-to-tail, harnessed two-humped Bactrian camels, early vintage Mack equipment trucks, and the circus rail spur. In the distant industrial background, the giant circular gas holders (gasometers) and brick smokestacks of the South Boston/Dorchester skyline rise against the data-path-to-node=\"21\">

  • Format: Set of three (3) antique gelatin silver 4x5 glass plate original camera negatives.

  • Archive Ephemera Included: Accompanied by the original vintage red-edge kraft newspaper filing sleeve with the historic \"last outdoor circus\" inscription.

  • Please Note: This listing is for the three (3) physical glass plate negatives and the original inscribed kraft sleeve only. Any positive photographic images shown in this listing are modern inverted digital scans provided solely as a visual reference to demonstrate how the negatives print. No physical paper photographs, modern prints, or reproduction prints are included with this purchase.

Condition:

Very Good antique condition. All three heavy glass plates are structurally sound and complete with no cracks, fractures, or breaks. Emulsions are remarkably crisp, dense, and clean, capturing exceptional sharpness from the texture of the weathered tent canvas and hand-lettered Cracker Jack stands to the distant industrial skyline. Authentic period newsroom handling wear is strictly confined to the extreme outer rebate edges away from the central image field. Accompanied by the original 1928 newsroom filing sleeve.

The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
