Original 1928-era autograph and friendship book belonging to a young woman named Hazel of Hazel, South Dakota, filled with handwritten inscriptions from friends, schoolmates and family members. Please see photographs for the book\'s size and overall physical appearance, as a precise measurement has not been provided. The album has a green flexible cover with gold “Autographs” lettering and its original cord binding.
The earliest inscriptions shown date from February 1928, and numerous entries are specifically addressed to “Hazel,” “Dear Hazel,” “Dearest Hazel,” and “Darling Hazel.” Many are dated or located at Hazel, South Dakota, while others mention Vienna, South Dakota and surrounding associations.
This appears to have originated as a school-era friendship/autograph album. One contributor remembers the “good old school days when we were together” and mentions an H.S. picnic, while another writes of the good times they shared “in work and play and at school.” The inscriptions include sentimental verses, humorous sayings, advice, affectionate messages and personal memories.
Among the particularly interesting entries are messages from Hazel\'s mother and sister, friends and school acquaintances. One contributor wishes Hazel success in “solving the mysteries of Physics,” while others recall school experiences and friendships. A 1933 entry reminisces about getting to know Hazel and mentions their “moonlight-nite strolls.”
The book evidently remained with Hazel for decades. Later inscriptions include a December 25, 1960 Webster, Minnesota message addressed “Dear Mom,” providing an interesting later family connection and extending the documented history of the album more than 30 years beyond its original school-period entries.
Visible dates range primarily through the late 1920s and early 1930s, with the later 1960 family inscription. Locations represented include Hazel and Vienna, South Dakota, with additional later geographic associations. Numerous contributors signed their names, making the album potentially useful for South Dakota genealogy, local history, school history and family-history research.
Hazel\'s surname may possibly be written inside the front cover, but the handwriting is not sufficiently clear for me to identify it with confidence, so I have not attributed a surname in this listing.
Condition is antique and used, with substantial age and handling wear. The cover shows creasing, cracking/splitting and edge wear; the binding cord shows wear; pages exhibit toning, occasional stains, marks and other age-related wear. Handwriting varies considerably in darkness and legibility. Please examine all photographs closely for condition and content.
A wonderful surviving piece of 1920s South Dakota school and social history, with considerably more historical and genealogical content than a typical autograph book.
