Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negative captured in December 1930, documenting an authentic slice of North Atlantic maritime labor: a commercial fisherman working in the hatch of a wooden workboat piled high with freshly harvested sea mussels to be used as line-trawl bait.

The period kraft filing sleeve is inscribed in vintage pencil:

"Mussel to bait - / collected 20 miles / outside — / Dec. 1930 / fisherman"

With a collector/editor notation in the bottom corner reading: "Very NICE!"

Historical Context:

Before the widespread adoption of artificial lures and large-scale industrial nets, offshore and inshore bottom fishermen (including haddock and cod long-liners) relied on massive quantities of fresh shellfish as bait. Specialized crews would venture up to 20 miles outside Boston Harbor into open coastal waters to dredge or harvest blue mussels, returning to the harbor wharves to sort, crate, and shell them for baiting the hundreds of gangion hooks on ground-trawl lines.

Very Good antique condition. Heavy glass plate is structurally sound with no cracks, fractures, or perimeter glass breaks. Emulsion across the primary workboat, fisherman, wooden crates, and dory is clean, sharp, and well-preserved with excellent tonal nuance. Features an authentic period darkroom grease pencil editorial crop mark ("7-12") in the upper left margin, along with minor edge age-silvering and perimeter handling wear strictly confined to the outside margins. Accompanied by its original vintage kraft darkroom sleeve.
