1940 Vintage Press Photo by ACME.Three persons were killed today in a mid-air collision between a Lockheed plane and a Vultee plane when the planes collided while flying into the sun.
The Vultee plane, piloted by Vance Breese (noted test pilot), landed after the collision despite a crumpled landing gear, while the Lockheed plane crashed in flames. Slain in the crash were Walter Quinton (pilot), Marshall McCarroll (Paramount Newsreel cameraman in charge of the company on the West Coast), and M. Coombs (photographer for the Vultee Aircraft Company).
The plane which crashed had been flying with another plane, taking pictures of it, and was returning to the airfield when the accident occurred.
