Well now, here’s a mighty interesting piece of U.S. Navy history from January 1946, just months after the end of World War II.
This is an original January 1946 issue of All Hands, the Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin. The cover features Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King with the words “From the Nation: Well Done,” marking his retirement after 48 years of naval service.
Inside is a great assortment of Navy photographs and articles looking back at the war and ahead to the postwar Navy. Subjects include Fleet Admiral King’s final report, submarine operations, how Japan struck Pearl Harbor, radar countermeasures, the postwar Naval Reserve, and a fascinating illustrated article on German secret weapons and experimental missiles.
There’s also plenty of period photography showing sailors, ships, wartime operations, entertainment for the troops, and life in the Navy during the transition from war to peace.
