The Village Room was an entertainment room of the Hotel Taft, the 2,250-room giant that opened in 1926 beside the Roxy as the Hotel Manger and took President Taft\'s name in 1931. Charley Drew was its long-running act — \'Charley Drew sings in the Village Room,\' the postcards promised, and his risque party-song records were cut live at the hotel — while Vincent Lopez broadcast from the Taft Grill for twenty years. The Taft slid with Times Square, into receivership by 1975; a $100 million conversion in the mid-1980s turned it into condominiums over a smaller hotel, today The Michelangelo.
