1952 ad: FRED TRUMP Beach Haven apts., Brooklyn; Kohler plumbing; Woody Guthrie For Sale

This is a double-page centerspread ad in color from the Saturday Evening Post in 1952 for Kohler Plumbing Fixtures. What makes it unusual and of interest, is that it is illustrated with nice panoramic paintings of five large New York City housing developments, and one of these was built by the father of current U.S. President Donald Trump.These complexes were Windsor Park in Queens; Wave Crest Gardens in Far Rockaway, Long Island; Glenwood Houses in Brooklyn; the Fordham Hill Project; and, in the bottom left corner:“BEACH HAVEN, Brooklyn, N.Y., Fred C. Trump, 7,800 fixtures.”The sheet is 13.5 x 21 inches in size, and is in excellent and attractive condition, with three small staple punctures along the centerfold line, which are scarcely noticeable (see photos). It will be shipped folded once, as originally issued.The section showing Fred Trump’s development measures 4x5 inches in size. The Beach Haven Apartments consisted of 23 buildings constructed in 1950 on 40 acres of land near Coney Island in Brooklyn.The accompanying ad copy begins by noting that: “Modern, large-scale housing projects have Kohler plumbing fixtures and fittings for attractive, practical design and time-tested serviceability. In the developments shown—typical of many recently built or nearing completion—over 31,000 Kohler fixtures with chromium-plated fittings were installed. . . .” Etc. In the entire ad, Fred Trump is the only individual identified as one of the developers. It is a rare and unique item connected to the father of Donald Trump, when Fred Trump’s son was only 6 years old.***********************
Oddly, Beach Haven has an unusual connection to popular culture, in that it was the subject of a song written by folk music legend Woody Guthrie (1912-1967). While suffering from the degenerative Huntington’s disease, Guthrie moved into a Beach Haven apartment in 1954, and thus had Fred Trump as his landlord for several years. Over the 1950s and ‘60s, Beach Haven became known for discouraging Blacks who sought to rent apartments there, and the Trump Organization was eventually sued by the federal government in 1972 over these racially discriminatory practices. Woody Guthrie had found these policies objectionable, and wrote a song on the subject in 1954, titled “Old Man Trump,” which had a chorus saying:Beach Haven ain\'t my home!
