On offer here is an ORIGINAL 'PILOT'S HANDBOOK' FOR THE GRUMMAN F9F-5, 5P JET FIGHTER. The Grumman 'Panther' was the FIRST US NAVY JET FIGHTER WHICH SAW COMBAT.
The 236 pp. manual is in very good 'used' condition and has the stamp of a Lt. W.N. Ottenville of the VMA (Marine Attack Squadron) 224 which we believe was on service aboard the USS Roosevelt in the early 1950's. The manual has had the original 1953 photo of the plane moved from the inside cover to the front cover for display purposes. When this manual was found in the estate, it was displayed under a plexiglass display case.
The Grumman F9F-5 Panther was a highly successful,carrier-based jet fighter used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during theKorean War. As a major upgrade over earlier variants, the F9F-5 featured alonger fuselage, aerodynamic improvements, and a powerful Pratt & WhitneyJ48 turbojet engine
Panthers were the first jet-powered aircraft to fly incombat for the U.S. Navy, famously downing Soviet-built MiG-15s during theKorean War. Future astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn notably flewPanthers during this conflict.
