Original mid-1950s Captain Midnight Secret Squadron decoder badge, issued in connection with the Captain Midnight club and sponsored by Ovaltine.
This unusual decoder measures approximately 1-3/4 inches in diameter and is made of chrome/silver-finished molded plastic. The front features a raised futuristic rocket ship running diagonally across the circular badge, with the large stylized “S” and “Q” Secret Squadron insignia behind it.
The reverse contains the original rotating cipher/decoder wheel, with the numbers 1 through 26 molded around the outer portion and alphabet characters on the inner rotating disc. Children could use the wheel to match letters and numbers and decipher Captain Midnight Secret Squadron coded messages.
This is the 1955–56 model sometimes referred to by collectors as the “SQ Plain Puzzle” decoder badge.
Condition: Vintage used condition with surface scratches, scuffs, age wear and areas of wear/loss to the bright silver/chrome finish. please examine photos closely. The original pin/pinback assembly on the reverse is missing, so this can no longer be worn as originally intended. The decoder disc itself is still present. No paperwork, membership card, instructions or other accessories are included.
