Edward E. White opened Whyte\'s at 145 Fulton Street in 1908, four years after arriving from St. Louis — an Alpine-chalet room of dark paneling, gilt-framed portraits and a long oak bar with well-shined brass spittoons. For sixty-six years it was the dining room of downtown\'s businessmen and city officials: finnan haddie was the house specialty, though regulars swore by the homemade rum-raisin ice cream, and a midtown sibling ran on 57th Street — this 1963 tap-room menu comes from that final decade. In April 1971 Whyte\'s was outoffer for its own space — \'so fantastically we just didn\'t have a chance,\' its manager said — and the doors closed for good.
