Original November 18, 1964 letter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of the Attorney General, printed on official State House letterhead and signed by Edward W. Brooke. The sheet measures approximately 10.5 x 7.25 inches and displays the Massachusetts state seal with Brooke’s printed title as Attorney General.
The letter is addressed to Mrs. Hugo W. Salminen of Maynard, Massachusetts, thanking her for a congratulatory letter following the November 3rd election victory. In the message, Brooke expresses gratitude for her support and states that her loyalty played a significant role in the election outcome, adding that he hopes to continue serving as Attorney General in a manner worthy of that trust.
Edward William Brooke III (1919–2015) was a major figure in Massachusetts and national politics. At the time of this letter he had just been elected Massachusetts Attorney General, and he would later become the first African American elected to the United States Senate by popular vote, serving two terms from 1967 to 1979.
The letter remains in good vintage condition with normal horizontal mailing folds and light age toning. The verso shows faint typewriter ghosting from the text on the front. Signed in ink above his typed name Edward W. Brooke.
Because Brooke later became a historic U.S. Senator, signed material from his early statewide political career is collectible to Massachusetts political historians, civil rights history collectors, and autograph collectors.
