On October 16, 1965, major, nationwide anti-VietnamWar protests, called theInternational Days of Protest, took placeacross the U.S. to oppose escalating military involvement.
Coordinated by the Fifth Ave Vietnam Peace ParadeCommittee, Vietnam Day Committee, Students for a DemocraticSociety (sds) and other groups, protests occurred in over 100 cities,including New York, Seattle, San Francisco Bay area, Boston, and Philadelphia.These included teach-ins, rallies, and draft card burning.
Seattle, WA:Approximately 350–400 people marched from the Federal Courthouse to WestlakeMall in the city\'s first major anti-war demonstration. Organized by the SeattleCommittee to End the War in Vietnam (SCEWV) and Students for aDemocratic Society (SDS), the marchers faced hostile spectators andcounter-demonstrators.
Berkeley/Oakland, CA:Following a massive march on Oct. 15, the Vietnam Day Committee(VDC) organized further actions. On Oct. 16, protesters attempting to marchto the Oakland Army Base were halted by police. In addition, the HellsAngels attacked anti-war protesters.
These protests marked a major escalation in theanti-war movement, directly challenging President Johnson\'s policies andincreasing draft calls.
