Speck was tried and convicted for the brutal mass murder of eight student nurses in Chicago on July 14, 1966. As noted in the original press caption, this photo was taken after court motions were heard on April 17, shortly after a jury sentenced him to death on April 15, 1967. The back of the photo features an authentic archive stamp from the Examiner Reference Library dated April 19, 1967, confirming its provenance as a working newsroom artifact.

Gerald W. Getty (1913–2004) was the chief public defender for Cook County, Illinois, best known for serving as the defense attorney for mass murderer Richard Speck.
