Original 1972 Nabisco package-design production file prepared by Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Inc., the prominent New York industrial-design firm.
The project was created for Nabisco’s “Cowboys and Indians Cookies” two-ounce box. The studio identification block provides the following information:
Client: Nabisco Inc.
Job title: Cowboy and Indian
Job number: 480
Date: June 2, 1972
Drawn by: SG
Scale: SS
Design firm: Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Inc.
Address: 110 East 59th Street, New York, New York 10022
The large-format production mechanical shows the unfolded package structure with exact dimensions, panel placement, cutting and folding lines, product artwork and labeling. A translucent overlay adds the red Nabisco trademarks, product lettering and production corrections.
Original handwritten annotations include color instructions, coding-area placement, department approvals and approval dates from June 1972. The file also contains an original full-color flattened production box mounted inside the portfolio, allowing the finished yellow-and-red packaging to be compared directly with the mechanical artwork.
Included elements:
• Large dimensioned package mechanical
• Translucent color and typography overlay
• Handwritten production notes and corrections
• Department approval signatures and dates
• Raymond Loewy/William Snaith studio identification block
• Original flattened Nabisco cookie box
• Large presentation/production portfolio
This is studio production material rather than a commercially distributed advertisement. Although it carries the Raymond Loewy/William Snaith firm name, it is not represented as personally drawn or signed by Raymond Loewy.
The materials show expected production and storage wear. The translucent overlay has tears, wrinkles, small losses, marks and yellowed attachment tape. The underlying board and portfolio have stains, discoloration, edge wear and other handling marks. The mounted box has original folds and light wear but retains vivid colors and clear graphics. Everything is being sold exactly as found; no restoration has been attempted.
The packaging reflects dated cultural imagery from its period and is offered strictly as an original historical example of American commercial design, printing and advertising.
A rare piece of Nabisco packaging history and an unusual surviving example of the professional package-development process associated with one of America’s most important industrial-design firms.
The complete production file shown in the photographs is the exact item the buyer will receive. It will be carefully packaged and shipped flat with rigid protection.
