This original company newspaper offers a fascinating look inside the Big Boy restaurant organization at the beginning of the 1980s, with articles, employee features, photographs, restaurant openings, corporate news, promotional programs and period advertising.
The newspaper measures approximately 11 x 16 inches and consists of 4 double-sided sheets / 8 pages total.
Among the features in this Winter 1980 issue:
• Preview of the 1981 Big Boy Executive Conference at the Marriott Marco Island Beach Hotel in Florida
• Opening of the first Big Boy restaurant in Tokyo, operated by Big Boy Japan
• Terry Bradshaw pictured accepting a Laurel Wreath Award as 1979’s “Best Male Professional Athlete”
• Coverage of the Big Boy Laurel Wreath Awards program
• Bob’s Big Boy Top Manager Awards, including Southern California restaurant managers
• Opening of a new Bob’s Big Boy in El Cajon, California
• Profiles and photographs of Bob’s store managers and employees
• Big Boy restaurant construction and openings around the United States
• A period list of Big Boy promotional merchandise, 27 items, including lapel pins, watches, playing cards, cufflinks, ashtrays, balloons and other items with their original 1980 prices
• Big Boy television advertising and promotional programs
• News concerning Marriott Corporation, then closely associated with the Big Boy restaurant system, including the new Anaheim Marriott nearing completion
• Features involving Frisch’s, Shoney’s, Elby’s, Azar’s and other regional Big Boy operators
• Numerous period photographs of restaurants, employees, executives and the familiar Big Boy character
Note:To preserve the experience of discovering this vintage employee publication much as Big Boy employees did when it was originally distributed, only the front page and a selection of interior teaser images are shown. The complete 8-page newspaper contains additional photographs, articles, company news, and period content for the purchaser to explore.
One especially interesting aspect of this publication is how clearly it illustrates the unusual structure of the Big Boy system at the time. Rather than being represented by a single restaurant company nationwide, the Big Boy name was used by numerous regional operators including Bob’s, Frisch’s, Shoney’s, Elby’s, Azar’s and others.
The issue also captures Big Boy during a period of substantial change and expansion. Contemporary company history indicates that around 1980 a number of Big Boy operators were modernizing their menus, restaurants and marketing while expanding into new markets.
Condition: Very Good vintage condition. No tears, writing or notable soiling. There is light handling/creasing and minor edge wear consistent with age, including the original horizontal fold where the newspaper was folded for distribution. Please review the photographs for additional condition details.
An excellent piece of original restaurant-industry ephemera for collectors of Bob’s Big Boy, Big Boy Restaurants, vintage restaurant memorabilia, roadside Americana, fast-food and diner history, Marriott memorabilia, or Southern California history.
Original 1980 publication — not a reproduction.
