Wisconsin - Natural Resources DepartmentEfforts to get lake trout to reproduce again in Lake Michigan got a boost last weekend as the Department of Natural Resources tried a technique that has worked in hatcheries. Eggs removed from mature females were sandwiched between mats of Astroturf at the University of Wisconsin Great Lakes Research Facility in Milwaukee, simulating the protection nature gives in gravel bars, and then planted on a reef off Milwaukee. The DNR hopes that the fish will hatch and then return in later years to spawn naturally on the reef. Part of the cost of the operation was paid with a grant of $995 from the Great Lakes Sport Fishermen. In the photo at left above, Vince Tripi places filled mats in a holder.
