Original Vintage 1985 Maxwell\'s Plum Fountain Room Restaurant Menu Ghirardelli Square San Francisco Bay Area Cafe Gathering Place California
Maxwell\'s Plum\'s second location, a San Francisco branch of Warner LeRoy\'s celebrated restaurant, opened in Ghirardelli Square in 1981 at a reported cost of about $7 million. The original flagship had opened on April 1, 1966, on Manhattan\'s Upper East Side. Maxwell\'s Plum was famed for its extravagant Art Nouveau and Tiffany decor - kaleidoscopic stained-glass ceilings, cascades of crystal, Tiffany lamps and a menagerie of ceramic animals - and as a glamorous celebrity magnet and \'swinging singles\' pick-up bar, with the New York flagship serving over 1,200 patrons a day. The Ghirardelli Square location was short-lived, still open in 1985 before it soon closed; the New York flagship closed abruptly on July 10, 1988.
