In early August 1989, more than 32,000 Scouts and leaders filled the tent city at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, for the 12th National Scout Jamboree. The theme was \"The Adventure Begins…With America\'s Youth,\" and the week offered everything that makes a jamboree special: merit badge midways, action centers, and patch trading with troops from every corner of the country and dozens of nations. The highlight came on August 7, when President George H.W. Bush flew in on Marine One to address the assembled Scouts in person.
