2013 Rittenhouse Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos 50th Anniversary — SketchaFEX sketch card — painted WWII helmet and rifle, signed by Matt Glebe
A fully painted sketch card from Rittenhouse’s 2013 Sgt. Fury 50th Anniversary set: a Howling Commando’s helmet, rifle and field pack on a battle-torn background, rendered in paint with the artist’s red signature at the edge. It is signed by Matt Glebe, half of the Glebe brothers, whose painted cards were the two-box dealer incentive for this release rather than a pack pull. Sketch cards are original art; each one is painted by hand and no two are alike. Raw and ungraded, in a toploader.
About the set
Rittenhouse Archives released Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos 50th Anniversary on September 18, 2013, as a premium-pack product limited to 99 boxes: fifteen packs of five cards, every pack carrying three base cards from the 1963–64 issues, one of nine Character Cards of Fury and the Howlers, and one hand-drawn SketchaFEX sketch card. With only 1,485 packs in existence it is one of the smallest Marvel sketch-card releases Rittenhouse ever made.
More than fifty artists drew the pack sketches, each free to work in whatever medium they chose. Above the pack cards sat two dealer incentives: a painted sketch card by Matt or Mick Glebe for every two boxes purchased, and a watercolor by Mark Texeira for every four. The Glebe brothers’ fully painted, photo-real war cards are the ones that turn up graded and command the highest prices from the set.

- Hand-painted original art on the official Rittenhouse Sgt. Fury SketchaFEX sketch card stock, with the printed Sgt. Fury sketch card back.
- Signed in red by Matt Glebe at the right edge of the painting.
- The Glebe painted sketch cards were the two-box dealer incentive for a product limited to 99 boxes, so very few exist; comparable Glebe Sgt. Fury cards have been graded CGC 9.
- The image is a still life of the Howlers’ gear: M1 helmet, M1 carbine and pack, with the 2nd Division diamond on the helmet.
The artist
Matt Glebe and his brother Mick Glebe are the sketch-card hobby’s best-known painters: fully rendered, photo-real work in acrylic and oil on a card the size of a playing card. Since 2010 they have been incentive and case-hit artists for Rittenhouse (Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Marvel), Upper Deck (Marvel Premier, Fleer Retro, Thor: The Dark World, Marvel 75th), Cryptozoic (Walking Dead, DC), Topps (Star Wars) and Perna Studios, and their cards routinely sell for several hundred dollars, with Marvel pieces reaching four figures. Their signature look is exactly this: dramatic light, weathered texture, and the sense of a movie still rather than a comic panel.
