Hi there and welcome to my listing for this beautiful White Tam O Shanter whetstone produced by Tam O Shanter Hone Works in Ayrshire, Scotland. The last of the mines closed around 40 years ago and as such these stones are no longer mined or produced. The photos in this listing are of the stone dry. tam O Shanter whetstones are described as slow cutting and produce a fine grey slurry. Enthusiasts say these stones are comparable to 10-12k ceramic stones.Description of Whetstone

Unused stock. Probably 100 years old. This is the rarer white variety of Tam O Shanter that was used for very fine polishing. Sometimes on other stones the labels also stated they were used for medical instruments. Though this stone looks a dark grey when wet, what matters is its fine grain structure. Somewhat confusingly, White Tam O Shanters are not in fact always lighter. Sometimes they can be quite a dark stone in tone. Condition of Whetstone

This stone is unused and is New Old Stock. Few tiny chips to the corners but pretty much in a mint condition. I always try to take good quality pictures for you to study as these can sometimes give an description of condition that goes beyond words. I like to list things as accurately and honestly as I can so like to include these details for your consideration. The last picture is a map I’ve made of the various mines where Tam O Shanter Hone Works sourced their stone. The company operated until around 20 years ago so these hones are no longer produced, leading to their increasing scarcity.
