What is a Galileo Thermometer and how do I read it? A Galileo Thermometer is a sealed glass column containing multiple liquid filled orbs. As the temperature changes, these orbs rise and fall to indicate the current ambient temperature (within the range of 56˚F - 96˚F / 14˚C - 34˚F). Under normal conditions, the orbs will separate into two groupings. To read the thermometer, you must observe the lowest orb within the top group. The temperature imprinted on the tag of that lower orb will be the current temperature of the liquid (within 2˚F accuracy). If all of the orbs are at the bottom, the liquid is hotter than the maximum temperature and if all the orbs are the top, it is hotter. This item is finished with a hand process that creates a varying finished height, which may be slightly higher or shorter than the stated height. How does it work? Inspired by the finding of Galileo Galilei, these high quality glass thermometers demonstrate how temperature affects density and buoyancy. Each glass orb is partially filled with liquid to achieve a precise weight. A metal counterweight for each temperature is hung from the bottom of the orbs. As the temperature changes, the density of the liquid inside each orb changes, causing it to rise or fall within the column. Each thermometer is individually calibrated to achieve an accuracy of 2°F. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: Due to the size of this thermometer and the volume of liquid needed to make it work, we have had a lot of difficulty shipping previous versions. This model will ship EMPTY in two boxes and you must assemble it before you can use it. The supplied liquid (which will arrive in a separate box) is a common mineral-based, ozone friendly solvent (paraffin oil) which prevents bacterial growth inside the thermometer column.
