The origins ofPachinkoare not clear.Some say it originated in theUSAduring the early 1900’s with a pinball-type machine that used nails to direct the balls.Ultimately, machines started appearing inJapanin the 1920’s and progressed into the characteristic round boards filled with nails to direct the balls that essentially were children’s toys.Balls were launched with wooden flippers and small prizes were awarded. Eventually the games became known as Pachi-Pachi.The first commercial pachinko parlor was opened inNagoyain 1948.

In the 80s,Pachinkomadness exploded as electronics and computer technology were integrated into the machines. Today, pachinko games are equipped with HD video screens, surround-sound and computer light shows that mesmerize the players. Currently,Japanlicenses approximately 15,000 licensed parlors (casino’s), 1.5 million machines and attracts over 18millionplayers, with thousands of professional pachinko players. This micro-economy generates annual sales of $280 Billion dollars: more than the GDP of most countries !

How to PlayPACHINKO

The essential object ofPachinkois to shoot the balls into pockets to win more balls. It is a game of skill and chance combined. The machines use tiny 11mm steel balls that are poured into the front trough that feeds the shooting mechanism. When the player puts their hand on the shooting knob, the machine begins shooting the balls into the playing field. The velocity of the balls being ejected is controllers by turning the knob left/right. There is also usually a button on the side of the knob…skillful players that find that “lucky spot” can press this button and make the machine shoot the balls one at a time.

ThePachinkomachines are fairly standard in that they are all equipped with preset pin layouts that randomly direct the balls by simple gravity and random bouncing as they fall through the machine. Most machines also have a system of spinning wheels, hidden slots and ledges that further direct the balls. All machines also have a center jackpot pocket which is the player’s main target. There are also additional pockets which invoke payouts. Most balls simply fall unsuccessfully though the machine, however a few end up in the winning pockets.

Balls that drop into the pockets reward the player with extra balls, but catching a ball in the center pocket initiates a reel-sequence, much like a traditional slot-machine. Most games use customized playing fields that match their theme, hence the graphics, reels and slots may look different, but function similarly, and typically uses 3-rows of reels. Matching the 3 reel symbols invokes the Jackpot and the exciting Bonus Rounds. In these rounds, the player goes through multiple jackpot sequences where they try to get the balls into the payout slots for additional winnings. Subsequent rounds payout at a higher rate of winnings. In the end, the player may win buckets of balls numbering in the thousands !
