6 ABP cut glass salt dishes with faceted loop handles, c.1900, all-over cutting: $120.00
A scarce set of six round cut crystal open salt dishes with appliedfaceted cut handles from the American Brilliant period, exhibiting all-over cutting with hobstar and fan design and shaped sawtooth cut rims. Circa 1890-1910. To find a set of six ABP cut glass matching open salt dishes with all-over cutting and opposing loop handles is rare; however to find a set in almost pristine condition is remarkable indeed. As delicate as these little dishes are, and being over 100 years old, we could only detect a single rim flake to the inside of a single sawtooth on the rim of a single dish. Two other dishes have minor manufacturing flaws known as straw marks inside the glass structure beside the handles, which are internal and were caused during the manufacturing process. We have taken close up photos of both the single rim flake and of the two straw marks in a side by side photograph. The late 19th/early 20th century was the peak of the American cut glass movement, with firms sparing no expense in covering the entire surface of the object with mitre cuts, which were then wheel polished until each cut became clear, and these then arranged as exactly laid out geometrical patterns, in our example a combination of cut multi-point hobstars interspersed with fan cutting. American cut crystal from this time frame surpassed any made in Europe for quality and diamond-like brilliance. As salt dishes were a part of the dining table experience, most have suffered chips or even cracks from improper handling or from drastic changes in water temperature from hot to cold. All of the above, demonstrates how remarkable it is to find such a high quality set of salts still complete and in almost perfect condition. The buyer of these will have acquired a true masterpiece of American glassware. Material: lead crystal with wheel-cutting and polishing.Maker: unidentified, but undoubtedly American, most likely from Pennsylvania to New England .Age: 1890-1910Size: 4\" length x 2 1/2\" diameter x 1 1/4\" height.
