This dual formula of protection was an extremely widespread blessing in the 12th to 16th centuries, intended to protect travellers, knights or clergy from harm on their journeys.

• Meaning: This is one of the best-known and most powerful Christian formulas of the Middle Ages. It served as a formula of protection and blessing. Whoever wore the ring placed themselves and all their actions under the direct protection of God. It was also used in everyday life as a quick prayer to ward off danger, illness or evil.
