AMERICA POEM - JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY - PATRIOTIC PF VOLLAND C1907 PC - 091526 V:
$8.99

Great vintage postcard!

ITEM DESCRIPTION:
  • Type: Antique early 20th-century patriotic greeting and literary excerpt postcard featuring high-relief debossed and embossed element strikes on thick matte cardstock.
  • Publisher & Photographer: Published by the prominent art-card and children\'s book publishing firm P. F. Volland & Company of Chicago, Illinois. Features their vertical attribution text line along the lower-left reverse border, their signature lower-left front corner palette emblem, and their decorative reverse divider line accented by the \"The Mark of Originality\" shield crest logo. The lower left front edge displays the official stock collection catalog code \"440\".
  • Subject Matter: A formal literary layout presenting the full three-stanza patriotic hymn poem titled \"AMERICA — O THOU, AMERICA — MESSIAH OF NATIONS!\" written by the famed Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley. The left margin features a crisp graphic vignette illustration displaying the Statue of Liberty backed by a flowing, multi-starred United States American Flag. The lower front face carries an explicit copyright line: \"Copyright, 1907 James Whitcomb Riley\".
  • Postal History: Divided back configuration completely unposted and unwritten. The reverse layout features a unique art-nouveau scrolling leaf header accenting the \"POST CARD\" text and contains an open double-bordered stamp box citing historical pre-WWI domestic one-cent and foreign two-cents postal rates.
  • Historical Interest: Exceptional primary source document capturing early 20th-century American civic patriotism and popular culture. James Whitcomb Riley wrote this specific text at the request of John Philip Sousa to serve as the lyrical poem for Sousa\'s 1902 patriotic anthem composition. P. F. Volland specialized in licensing works from iconic American writers to sell high-end artistic cards, making this an ideal crossover item for literary collectors and political ephemera historians alike.
CONDITION:
  • Clean unposted vintage condition. Displays sharp structural borders, very minor uniform corner tip rubbing, a tiny stray pencil artifact notation \"5F\" in the upper-left reverse margin, and minimal natural uniform paper toning consistent with a card from the Golden Age era. My postcards are in good or better condition and are standard sized (3.5\"x 5.5\") unless noted. Please examine the enlarged images provided todetermine condition, and feel free to ask questions.
