This listing is for a hard-to-find unbranded hot water warming/serving dish/plate in the blue willow pattern. These warming plates can fairly regularly be found with metal bottoms, but the ones that are made entirely of ceramic are hard to find. This is NOT a bowl and plate that were glued together - this is a single piece of ceramic. There\'s a hole on the edge of the plate where you pour in hot water, which keeps the food on the plate warm on the table. The cork is long gone. I\'m pretty sure this piece dates to the late 1800s and was probably made in England, but it is unmarked. Measures 10\" in diameter.
Someone really cherished this piece - when chips happened, they saved each small piece and reattached. The repairs are amateur, but really not bad. Because of the blue willow pattern on the top, the repairs are really only noticeable on the UNDERSIDE of the rim. See close up photos. No cracks or staining. Because of the repairs, this piece is recommended for display only, not actual use. A lovely survivor.
In the Blue Willow legend, a the beautiful daughter of a powerful man fell in love with her father\'s secretary. Discovering their love, the father banished the secretary and constructed a great fence to keep his daughter contained. She could only walk by the water and the willows. She despaired until she received a message from her lover. At a banquet, he rescued her, but her father noticed and chased them across a bridge. The got away, but years later, her father caught up with them. The secretary was killed, and the daughter died as well. In pity, the gods turned them both into doves so they could fly together forever.
