This is an Antique mid-19th century MarkedCalifornia Gold Rush period AmericanFederal Eagle decorated oval tin gold scale, case & weights set, circa 1848- mid 1850\'s; in a pocket size that was favored by both gold prospectorsthen, and collectors today.Almost all of these scales were made in Germany and imported to America forgold seekers headed to California to seek their fortunes. This one is markedGERMANY on an old bottom tag, which is unusual.

These tin pocket cases come in a variety ofshapes, sizes, colors & decorations, with the oval shape and scarce colorsbeing the most desirable. The most sought-after decoration is the moniker\" MINER\'S IMPROVED GOLD SCALE\" & \"MAUFACTURED EXPRESSLY FORCALIFORNIA\" with a gold line border decoration and a center panel of theAmerican Federal Eagle clutching arrows and olive branches in gold.

These were pocket scales carried in theCalifornia Gold Fields, and many are found dented / dinged / damaged / brokenhinge / scale pieces missing or weights lost, et al; and each has their ownhistory and idiosyncrasies. This tin case has no dents or dings and has almostof the original outside dark color that looks black indoors but in directsunlight the actual color is a very dark green. Understandably, the originalpaint on these tin cases is delicate, and most of have scratches, rub marks, areworn, flaked, and have uneven surfaces in the thin surface paint caused byheat, moisture, storage, and natural aging, use and handling over about 170-175years. These tin cases are next to impossible to find in fine condition andimpossible to find in mint condition. Indoors, this tin case looks black overall,with a few minuscule scattered nicks. There is an area on the top to the leftof the eagle from naturally occurring flaking of the surface paint that has adecent restoration from loss of paint that looks great as opposed to having ashiny silver metal spot showing. There is also a hard to see thin strip on theback top edge just above the hinge that has been touched up. The inside of thelid shows what typical naturally occurring flaking looks like from surfacepaint drying over about 175 yearsor so;even inside the case which is mostly protected from the elements. There is a1\" soldered hinge that holds the top and bottom together at the back istight, demonstrating that the case has had little use; and the inside of thecase is in fine condition with the usual flaking exception from the scale &weights.

Overall, this set is in very good overallcondition considering its extreme age of 175+ years as a utilitarian objectcarried in the California Gold Fields. This is an original medium size pocket scaleabout 6\" long X 3\" wide X 1 1/8\" tall. This size was intendedfor use with gold dust & placer gold nuggets that were mostly panned out ofthe riverbanks by the mid 1850\'s. Some of these scales had a thin partition onthe inside corner for the weights, and some of the smaller scales had hingedcovers. This has the partition to hold the small thin square weights, with thelarger brass weights outside. There are 11 weights; 5 brass weighs, (2) 2ounces. a 1 ounce, and 2 smaller nesting weights, and 6 thin flat markedmatching weights marked 1 to 6 grains. The brass balance scale is correct forthis size with a 5 7/8\" long beam and is complete, with original brasschains & connectors are original and 2 3/8\" diameter pans with afinely upturned border and nice natural aged patina with the original pointer,hanging clip and bottom clip. The brass scale is shiny as are the weights,demonstrating this piece has seen very light use. The entire set, including thecase, scale and weighs weigh 8.7 ounces or 248 grams. The top lid closesproperly and should be closed gently so it can be opened slowly and carefully andavoid unnecessary handling and potential flaking of the delicate paint of thetop. Note: do not attempt to clean, polish, wipe the painted tin, and extracare should be taken when handling the case. Irregardless of the spot of restoration,overall, this piece is in fine condition with no dents and expected flaking insidethe case from carrying. Note: it is very difficult to photograph a curved shinyobject with limited lighting, and I took dozens of images to try to show thecondition. These scale sets are hard to find complete; especially in very goodcondition with almost all of the original paint and displays well.
