This piece is a hand-carved, hand-painted African soapstone plate, traditionally crafted by artisans in the Kisii region of Kenya. Known locally as kisii stone, this natural mineral is soft and pliable when freshly quarried, making it an ideal medium for carving and smooth shaping. The stylized central figures forming a heart shape while holding hands represent unity, community, and love. The figures are bordered by four mid-century modern style starbursts or celestial points carved out of a vibrant turquoise dyed background. Artisans color the smooth stone surface using natural or acrylic dyes, then utilize fine tools to etch or scratch away the top color layer to reveal the stark white soapstone underneath. Since soapstone is a soft mineral, it is highly susceptible to chipping, scratching, and water damage. It should strictly be used as a decorative display dish, trinket tray, or coaster rather than for serving food.
