Beautiful mid-19th-century pressed-glass whale oil lamp, dating approximately to the 1840s–1850s.
The lamp has a handsome hexagonal stepped base, paneled stem and a wide ribbed font. It retains its pewter collar and removable double-tube whale oil burner. The long tubes extend into the font, helping conduct heat downward to keep the heavier oil fluid enough to burn—an identifying feature of an authentic whale oil burner.
The clear glass is substantial and nicely molded, with strong architectural lines throughout.
Measurements:
* 6 3/4 inches high to the top of the pewter collar
* 3 5/8 inches across the base
Condition:Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or other glass damage noted. The pewter collar and burner have age-appropriate darkening, oxidation and surface wear, including oxidation on the burner tubes. Burner is untested and no wicks are included. Please examine the photographs, as they are an important part of the description.
A particularly attractive example of early American lighting, suitable for a whale oil lamp, Sandwich-style glass or early lighting collection. Maker and exact pattern are presently unidentified.
