Antique 1890s - 1910s Lot of 2 Fraternal Hoodwink Goggles Masonic Odd Fellows For Sale

Striking lot of two antique fraternal hoodwink goggles, the unusual type traditionally associated with lodge initiation rituals and used by fraternal organizations including the Freemasons and Odd Fellows.Dating approximately to the late 19th to early 20th century, c. 1890s–1910s, these are early mechanical fraternal hoodwinks of the type manufactured as lodge and initiation regalia around the turn of the century. Dating is approximate; no maker or organization markings were found.Both examples feature brown leather face pieces with decorative gold-tone cord trim, black fabric nose bridges, deep red velvet interiors, metal eyepieces, movable opaque covers, spring mechanisms and distinctive projecting side knobs. The circular covers can be positioned open or closed, creating a particularly unusual and sculptural appearance.Both goggles are in heavily worn antique condition with considerable age and use. The leather is dry, crazed, worn and distressed, with areas of loss and separation. The red velvet interiors are worn, with tears and losses around the eye openings. The straps and fastening components are damaged and deteriorated, including broken and incomplete sections, worn leather tabs, damaged eyelets and aged elastic/webbing. The black metal components show scratches, paint loss, oxidation, surface wear and discoloration. The decorative cord trim is worn and discolored. There is general soiling, dust, loose fibers and age-related deterioration throughout. Please examine all photographs closely.Despite their condition, these remain an exceptionally atmospheric pair of early fraternal objects with tremendous display appeal, particularly with the mechanical eye covers displayed either raised or lowered.
