A rare and beautifully preserved 118-year-old chromolithograph titled “The Five Senses” by listed American artist H.C. Plumb (1847–1930), published 1907 by The Gray Litho Co., New York.
About the Print:
The original painting was exhibited at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair Exposition where it won acclaim. This chromolithograph depicts five kittens at play on a Victorian vanity, surrounded by roses, a rococo clock, hand mirror, perfume bottle, hairbrush, and ribbons — each kitten representing one of the five senses.
What Makes This Listing Special:
This print comes with a handwritten Owner’s Provenance Record documenting its history, including preserved original hanging wire and original backing paper fragments. The Shwayder Brothers, Inc. (Denver) retailer label on the original backing — the company that became Samsonite — helps date the mid-20th century reframing.
Period pencil inscription on backing believed to identify a previous owner.
Condition:
• Colors remain vivid and rich after 118 years
• Age-appropriate crazing to lower portion of print. General wear consistent with an antique piece.
