Dating to the 1910s/1920s, this candid-style portrait depicts two men relaxing outdoors on a wooden floor or porch. The gentleman on the left is dressed in a formal waistcoat, tie, and fedora hat, while the man on the right sports a heavy knit sweater vest, a textured straw hat, and is actively smoking a tobacco pipe. Seated proudly between them is a beautiful, large curly-coated Spaniel hunting dog with long, feathered ears.
What makes this piece incredibly rare is its studio production provenance. Written in elegant vintage black ink script across the top is the official designation \"Proof only\". In early photography, these working proofs were temporary samples shown to families to secure orders before final, expensive retouched prints were made. The right margin also features an official raised, embossed studio blind stamp seal.
