Antique Albert Style Gold Watch Chain with Masonic Keystone \"HTWSSTKS\" Agate Fob:
$125.00

Offered is an antique single-Albert-style watch chain. It features a translucent agate wheel fob with engraved letters representing Freemasonry. Total weight of the chain and fob is 23.07 grams. The chain is 13.5 inches long from the clasp to the T-bar; the fob and its attached chain is about 2.75 inches long.
The Masonic fob features a translucent keystone (perhaps chalcedony or pale agate) inset with letters. The black letters on the keystone-shaped watch fob—HTWSSTKS—stand for \"Hiram, The Widow\'s Son, Sent To King Solomon.\"This phrase and its acronym are central to Royal Arch Masonry, a major decree within the York Rite of Freemasonry.
The letters read clockwise around the central circle of the keystone:
  • H – Hiram
  • T – The
  • W – Widow\'s
  • S – Son
  • S – Sent
  • T – To
  • K – King
  • S – Solomon
This refers to Hiram Abiff, a master craftsman from Tyre described in biblical accounts and Masonic history. According to the tradition, Hiram was the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali and was sent by King Hiram of Tyre to assist King Solomon in the architectural design, casting, and construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Why the symbolism is important in Freemasonry:
  • The Mark Master Degree: The acronym serves as the \"mark\" or emblem of a Mark Master Mason, the first degree conferred in a Royal Arch Chapter. It represents a craftsman\'s unique signature placed on stone blocks during the temple\'s construction.
  • The Keystone Shape: The translucent agate stone itself is shaped like an architectural keystone—the wedge-shaped stone at the apex of an arch that locks all the other stones into place. In Masonic allegory, the keystone symbolizes the completion of a grand design, spiritual strength, and the crucial piece that holds a brother\'s moral framework together.
  • Virtues of Craftsmanship: For Masons, the emblem serves as a constant reminder of fidelity, industriousness, and dedication to one\'s craft, modeled after Hiram Abiff\'s legendary commitment to completing the Temple.
The circa Victorian watch chain features a traditional T-bar, a secure swivel clasp, and the translucent stone fob. The chain shows moderate age patina consistent with careful use over the past century.
