Salt-glazed beehive jugs, such as the one for sale here, are historic stoneware containers. Popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were used for storing and transporting whiskey, molasses, and vinegar. The ceramic finish from salt glazing (where salt creates a glassy coating) is durable and beautiful both. Known for their distinctive, rounded "beehive" shape, these jugs now serve as an iconic piece of American folk art. Think of them as early commercial packaging before glass - and later plastic - became dominant.

CONDITION: Considering the age, use, & material, I would consider this Antique Early 1900s Salt Glaze Whiskey 1 Gallon Jug manufactured by the Buckeye Pottery Co. of Macomb, IL to be in good condition. It is primitive and rustic looking - same as the day it was made. There are no loose or wobbly parts. The jug is completely intact, though it has not been recently tested in terms of holding liquids. There are flaws, but there are also no signs of repairs. The jug is all original, which is what counts if you’re purchasing an antique. Chances are, this jug was manufactured with defects. Nothing is perfect, especially primitive, handmade crock-ware. Time has added it’s own twist. That said, there is no rust or corrosion visible to my eye, and no musty smells or unpleasant odors detected by my nose. Quite the opposite. The jug looks clean and well cared for, and actually exudes a pleasant aroma if you stick your nose into the opening. However, there are scattered stains. By my best judgement, there appears to be minimal loss of color on the cobalt blue leaf stamp (please use your best judgement when reviewing the pictures). There are cracks, fractures, scratches, scuffs, pits, crevices, grooves, flea bites, and overall wear and tear, all appropriate considering this item’s day-to-day practical applications in Early 20th Century America. If you want a perfect, pristine jug, this is not the one for you. On the other hand, if you want a jug that screams, “I HAVE A STORY!” - this is your jug. If the idea of an old item being used by talking, walking, breathing people living in America, 100 to 125 years ago or so, is appealing - this is your jug. If you like old things to look old, this is really, truly your jug. It has character, charm, and beauty - the kind that only the real deal can offer.
