This striking piece features the VERONA pattern associated with pottery production in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. The decoration is wonderfully detailed, with a romantic European-inspired landscape featuring classical architecture, figures, water and statuary rendered in traditional cobalt blue.
The domed lid is surrounded by elaborate floral and geometric borders and topped with a distinctive pierced/openwork handle. The coordinating bowl continues the blue-and-white decoration and has a beautifully shaped rim, creating an impressive presentation when the two pieces are displayed together.
The underside bears the decorative blue VERONA backstamp, and an older inventory/collection label marked B179 remains attached.
The piece shows extensive fine age-related crazing throughout the glaze, giving it the wonderfully timeworn appearance collectors love in early transferware. There is also expected discoloration, surface wear and evidence of age and previous use. Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
This is the type of piece that looks spectacular displayed in a china cabinet, on a sideboard or incorporated into a collection of antique blue-and-white pottery.
