Antique Dark Wood Box Push Button Lock Mahogany? Keepsake Drafting Writing For Sale

This is an antique wood box; not sure if mahogany or other; measures about 2.5\" x 3.25\" x 8.5\"; to open you push the button on front; has dovetail joinery at corners; not sure what it was used for; preowned; found at an estate sale; dusty inside; there is an opening below the hinge that can be seen on the backside; see photos please.
