WHAT IT IS:
Beautiful antique pictorial silkwork depicting an elegantly dressed courting couple in a detailed architectural setting. Likely late Georgian to Regency / early 19th century based on the style and construction of comparable period silkwork pictures.
This small piece contains an extraordinary amount of hand needlework. Nearly the entire composition is rendered in fine silk embroidery, including the couple’s elaborate clothing, floor, architectural background, borders, planter and foliage. Carefully varied stitch direction creates folds, shading, texture and dimension throughout the picture.
The faces and exposed flesh incorporate painted/rendered details characteristic of antique pictorial silkwork techniques. Museum collections document early 19th-century examples combining silk embroidery with painted watercolor details.
Of particular interest is the extensive architectural embroidery. Even the background panels and structural borders have been carefully worked rather than simply relying on a painted background.
Mounted in an old arched wooden frame. A small area of the unworked foundation textile remains visible along the lower edge, showing how the completed textile was fitted into its frame.
A wonderful example for a collector of antique needlework, Georgian/Regency textiles, silk embroidery, folk art or early decorative arts.
CONDITION:
Very good antique condition considering its considerable age. The silk embroidery remains remarkably well preserved with extensive stitching intact and beautiful surviving cream, gold, gray and blue/teal tones. A tiny area of stronger red remains visible at the woman’s shoe.
The wooden frame shows age-related surface wear, small nicks and finish loss. Reverse retains aged backing material with old nails/tacks and evidence of previous mounting/hanging. Hanging wire appears to be a later addition. Foundation textile is visible along a small portion of the lower edge.
No restoration has been attempted. Please enlarge and review all original photographs and video, which are an important part of the condition description.
