Antique Hoyt’s “German Cologne” Bottle – 5¢ Sample Size (c. 1885–1905)

A charming Victorian-era miniature perfume from F. Hoyt & Co., Philadelphia, retaining its original printed label, the rare neck wrap, and the original cork. This is the small 5¢ size, designed as a counter sample and widely sold through American drugstores in the late 19th century. Most examples were thrown away after use, which makes complete survivors like this unusually scarce.

Hoyt’s branded its cologne as “German,” referencing the prestige of European perfume houses during the era. For a single nickel, American customers could “buy a little touch of Europe” — a marketing approach that helped establish Hoyt’s as one of the most recognizable domestic cologne names of the Victorian period.

The main rectangular label features beautifully shadowed gothic typography, and the neck wrap retains legible parts of the decorative “Trade Mark” / “Signed” frame. The “5¢” price mark remains clearly visible, adding both character and context.

The bottle is made in clear hand-blown glass, with the expected Victorian miniature perfume profile: short body, flared lip, and narrow shoulders — small enough to fit in a pocket, purse, or vanity case.
