Antique NW Native American Handwoven Lidded Basket – Pictorial / Geometric Design
Beautiful antique handwoven basket with fitted lid, featuring striking pictorial and geometric designs in natural tan, dark brown/black, orange and green tones.
The body displays repeating stylized figures or bird-like motifs along with narrow colored bands. The domed lid has an especially attractive large woven pictorial design. The interior construction and woven/plaited base are shown clearly in the photographs.
This basket came from the estate of a collector of Native American artifacts who lived in Northern California.
Condition: The basket body displays very well with age-related wear. There is a one inch hole/loss in the center area of the lid, with broken and possibly missing weaving, as clearly shown in the close-up photographs. This is recent damage and most of the material should all be available for the necessary repair. There are also scattered areas of wear, minor fiber loss and looseness consistent with age. No attempt has been made to repair the damaged area. Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
Tribal affiliation and exact age are unknown. Based on construction and design, this appears consistent with Western/Northwestern Native American basketry, but no specific tribal attribution is guaranteed.
